THE
UNSINKABLE TITANIC
The
storm of ¡§Titanic¡¦ is still sweeping every corner of the world.
This movie has broken almost all box-office records in the world including Hong Kong.
Thousands of viewers are attracted to watch this film more than once because of its
beautiful pictures and touching story. The unique features have brought James Cameron both
wealth and reputation in achieving 11 awards in the Oscars. Most of the
viewers merely
pay attention to the sad love story. However, this film also reflects the social
phenomenon in the early 1900s. In this essay, I would like to discuss this social
phenomenon and share my feelings of this film with you.
"Titanic" represented the arrogance of the British. Titanic was built in the early 20th
century. It was the greatest ship at that time in the world. It revealed that Britain was
the strongest empire in the world. In the film, all passengers were proud of themselves to
have a chance to get on the Titanic. When the ship set sail, thousands of people flocked
to the pier. Some of them said farewell to their friends while some went to admire this symbol
of British glory. They had never thought of the sinking of the Titanic. Someone even said
that no one, not even god, could sink the Titanic. Owing to their arrogance, the tragedy of
the Titanic occurred. According to the film, the unsinkable Titanic crashed into the iceberg
mainly because the owner of the Titanic requested the captain to accelerate the ship.
Besides, two-third of the passengers on the Titanic died since there were not enough life
boats on the ship. Both inadequate life boats and the acceleration of Titanic reflected
British arrogance. I believe that if the British had not attempted to show her glory to the
world, this mishap could have been avoided.
"Titanic" also reveals class discrimination. At the beginning of the film,
before boarding the Titanic, the poor had to pass body checks but not the rich. On the
ship, the poor and the rich were separated. The living environment was entirely different.
The third class deck where the poor lived was packed. On the contrary, the
cabins in the first class had separate big living rooms and bedrooms. It is only part of the unfairness.
Besides, due to the class discrimination, the poor did not have the right to flee for
their lives. The film has described the poor screaming for help as they were not permitted
to get into the life boats and were shut behind the iron gates. It is unfair and disgusting!
The
gap between the rich and the poor is extremely great. Every day, nobles and celebrities
participated in parties on the Titanic. In this scene, we know that the rich dedicated
nothing to society but they enjoyed lives of luxury. I am pleased this social
phenomenon has improved.
Furthermore,
the flaws of human beings have also been portrayed. At the end of the film, when the ship
was sinking, the rich refused to ride the boats back to save others. They were afraid that
the life boats would be over-crowded. This shows that many human beings are selfish and
inconsiderate. This leads to thousands of deaths.
All
in all, "Titanic¡¦ is a very successful film. The success is
related to the touching script. It touches all watchers' hearts. Many people cannot help
crying after watching "Titanic¡¦. "Titanic" helps us to review to
the tragedy and flaws of human beings. The sinking of the Titanic teaches us a lesson. This
tells us the fruit of arrogance is sour and we should also learn to be considerate. Due to
the meaningful script, ¡@ "Titanic"¡¦ deserves the 11 Oscars
awards and I believe it will remain in every cinema-goer's’s heart.
