A critical review of three posters on road safety
1.Introduction:
We are doing a project on advertising for our Social Studies teacher, Mr.C. Mak. As part of the project, (1)we have reviewed the three posters on road safety. We have asked the artists, Robin Lam (Form 6A), Careers teachers (Ms. So) and English teacher (Mr.Fung) for comments. Besides, we have also (3)distributed written questionnaires to all junior and senior students and (2)interviewed a number of them to find out their opinions of the three posters.2.Information
Poster 1
(a)Artist’s aim
(4)The Artist wants both sexes will pay attention to road safety. (5)He also warns about them not to copy behaving dangerously and wearing unsuitable clothes.
(b)Teacher’s reaction
Ms So said that (6)the poster would catch young people’s attention but (6) the fashionable clothes of the boy and girl in it might make people want to copy them. Mr. (8)Fung criticizes the negatively phrased commands is difficult to understand and (9)the caption is too long.
(c)Student questionnaire results
(10)According to sex, junior boys and girls like Poster 1 equally while senior boys like it more than girls. (11)According to age, junior forms like poster 1 while senior forms do not.
(d)Junior and senior students¡¦ comments during interviews
Junior forms students (12)admire the behaviour of the boy and girl in the poster and some of them (13)do not understand the words of it. (14)Seniors form students think the way they are dressed makes a bad impression on younger students.

Poster 2
(a)Artist’s aim
(16)All young people should be actively involved with road safety.
(b)Teacher’s reaction
Ms So thinks that (17)this poster draws attention to difficulty many old people have and (18)shows only girl helping. Mr. Fung points out that it is not sure who is supposed to be speaking in the poster.
(c) Student questionnaire results
According to sex, (20)girls like poster 2 better than boys. According to age, (21)senior forms like it better than junior forms.
(d)Junior and senior students¡¦ comments during interviews
Juniors (22)do not understand the message and think that (23)only girls shown as helpful. Seniors feel (24)it is not fair showing only girls shown as helpful.

The poster should show boys also being helpful.
Poster 3
(a)Artist’s aim
(26)Everyone should learn about road safety.
(b)Teacher’s reaction
Ms So criticizes (27) teacher in the poster scolding only girls. Mr. Fung shows that the poster (28)does not reflect road safety and (29)the caption distracts from intended message.
(c)Student questionnaire results
According to sex, (30)boys like poster 3 more than girls. According to age, (31)juniors like it more senior form students.
(d)Junior and senior students¡¦ comments during interviews
Juniors think the poster is (32)boring and it (33)shows girls do not work so hard. (34)Seniors claim that the message of the poster is unclear and it is (35)biased towards boys.

Conclusion
(37)Poster 2 is the best.
