UE 2001 Section E

Task 1

On 11 March 2001, our school offered a one-week trip to Jiangxi Province for 15 students. All students and teachers think that the trip was an overall success.

There are several aims of the project. First of all, our Principal, Mr. Tong, expressed his wishes for closer ties with schools in China (1). And the key goal of this program is to develop a sense of identity with China among the students. (2) In the education exchange, students would understand Chinese history better. (3) Furthermore, the trip gave our school students the experience of traveling, (4) meanwhile it helps students to improve Putonghua. (5) The trip would also serve as a team-building exercise to teach students how to work together, (6) as well as to provide English conversation practice to Yishan College students. (7) Lastly, aims of this visit include learning about rice growing. (8)

Yishan College is located in Yongfeng Town, Jiangxi Province. There are  450 students (9) and 10 teachers (11) in that school. It was established 24 years ago. (10) All of its students are from the surrounding rural community. (12) Recently, much area around Yongfeng was badly affected by flooding, so that fund of English language program has been reduced, (13) so that their students had very limited opportunities to practice the English that they learn in school. (14)

The province contains many sites where the key event in Chinese revolutionary history took place, including Jinggangshan, known as the ¡§Cradle of the Chinese Revolution¡¨ and ¡§Rujin¡¨, the ¡§Red Capital¡¨. (15) It is also the birthplace of many culture and religions leaders including the founder of Zen Buddhism, Liang Chieh. (16)

The journey started at 11 March and ended on 18 March. (17) There are 2 teachers (19) and 15 students in the trip. (18) We went there by train at Kowloon Station. (20) We stayed in a hostel called Yongfeng Student Hostel. (21)

We had several activities there, take an example, cookery lessons. (22) Apart from it, we have lectures about history every afternoon. (23) Besides the lectures, we had a city tour on 12 March morning, with English-speaking guide. (24) In addition, we had a rice-growing activity, we planted a small rice field in the school grounds. (25) Yishan students took us on field trip to Ruijin, but it was so long. (26) In the end of the trip, we had a special concert, (27) and we had a party in the evening with disco. (28)

For the plans for the future of Project Fan, Yishan College students will visit Hong Kong in October 2001, (29) and Hong Kong College Students will return visit to Jiangxi next year. (30) Yishan College established a pen-friend club to build up a link between 2 schools. (31) This exchange program is very meaningful, so I wish more students could be the volunteers for future trip.
