Task 1

1. Dear Mr. Nan,

(5) An international table tennis tournament is to be established by the Table tennis Tournament committee of the Pearl River Sports Federation and it will be held in (6) January 1996. (3) On behalf of the Federation, I am writing to (2) invite your company, (4) Winner Sports, to provide sponsorship for the tournament.

Winner sports makes sports gear, which would be a (11) suitable product to be associated with the tournament. (22) It would benefit greatly from all publicity arising from the tourament. (26) The competitors in the tournament would use the clothing and equipment. Besides, (25) the officials involved in the tournament would bear badges, caps and T-shirts with Winner Sports name and logo. On top of that, if the sponsorship is accepted, (23) the tournament will be called the Winner Sports Tennis Tournament. (27) All the tickets, programs and other promotional material would also have Winner Sports tournament printed on them.

(8) Although a lot of money is involved, the sponsor will get (9) good returns for what they spend and some even (10) huge profits can be made. If the sponsor do well, profit will be at hand.

Besides profits, the sponsor of a successful event will be (19) rubbed off on by the success. If it is a big or international tournament, and (20) the home team wins, then, all the emotion, which the spectators feel, all the excitement about the victory becomes linked to the sponsor. (21) In this tournament, Hong Kong/Chinese may do well. The audience will feel that the sponsor has somehow helped their favorite players to win.

Sponsoring also helps (18) image building of a sponsor. Young people have a very strong sense of being a part of a sport with huge audience. This image building is very effective for the sponsor, who gains enormously as an organizer of the “fun” event, and this benefit (12) lasts for beyond the duration of the event.

(24) The sponsor also benefits from the hard work of the dedicated organizer without having to pay. Besides, as the tournament is a worldwide and (7) it is likely that more than 60 top players will join, the sponsor will gain (13) worldwide attention. (16) TV coverage will include China and the tournament will include top Chinese players, this will (17) help promote your products in China, (14) at which Winner Sports is aiming.

4. Re: Next meeting

The next meeting of the committee will be held at the (7) boardroom on the third floor of Sports House (5) 31 March (6) at 9.am.

We will discuss several topics. They include the survey done on (8) Mr. Chiu’s fax and (9) its results collected by questionnaire to (10) all the Federation members think about the matter of sponsorship before rejecting Near Cut’s offer.

Another topic we will discuss is the progress of sponsorship of Table Tennis Tournament. I also want to inform you that we are (11) approaching to Winner Sports as the sponsor through considerations.
