SET 2 1998
First of all, I will suggest some
improvements in the primary education.
The number of P.E. lessons should be
increased. According to a certain statistics about the health of children in Hong Kong,
the cholesterol level of most children is high. It is the result of food they take in and
their lack of exercises. Nowadays, most students have only two P.E. lessons a week. If it
can be increased to four, children may become stronger. But the number of academic lessons
may not be adequate by cutting two lessons for P.E. lessons, and we do not know which
lessons should be cut.
Pupils should be given more chances to do
experiments. Nowadays, pupils can only watch ETV or read text books to know how to do
experiments. It is more interesting for them to work on themselves. It also makes them
take initiative to learn science subjects. It is practical to primary students who are
from P.4 to P.6. They can do simple experiments like how to use a prism to diverge light
rays. We have to keep in mind that the pupils may not be able to do some complicated
experiments. It leads to a constraint on the selection of experiments.
Then I will suggest some improvements in
the secondary education.
Students should be given more chances to go
outside classroom to have their lessons. Students can broaden their horizon by visiting
different places like museums and water treatment plants. Furthermore, students can know
more about the nature. In the geography text books, we can obtain information of different
kinds of rocks. Through visits, we can know what the rocks really look like and feel the
texture of the rocks. It cannot be launched in senior forms because of the tight schedule
of the syllabus.
Computers should be used extensively in
teaching. By using computers, abstract ideas in physics can be conveyed in the form of
motion pictures. Students can understand them easily. ¡¥Talk
and chalk¡¦ may be too boring for students. By using
computers, all things can be shown clearly with some visual effects. Students will find
them interesting and pay more attention in class. However, not all the teachers know how
to use computers to teach.
