The problem of juvenile delinquency

Let¡¦s get started. We are going to appear on a program about young people¡¦s attitude to crime. In this program, we have to discuss the reasons for young people committing crimes, the means to discourage potential offenders from committing crimes and help young criminals readjust to society. We also have to make some suggestions to deal with the problem of juvenile delinquency in Hong Kong.

What are the causes of youths committing crimes? Out of curiosity, young people try out everything that they have never experienced before. As they are not mature, they do not know how risky they are and how serious the consequences will be. Apart from curiosity, in this economic downturn year, people are not as rich as before. However, most of the youngsters tend to follow suit. Owing to vanity, they want to buy luxuries and use brand names products such as Prada and Issay Miyaki, in order to show off or not to be teased and looked down upon by their counterparts. Nevertheless, their parents may hardly give them sufficient money to buy whatever they want. Therefore, they may commit crimes such as shoplifting and smuggling as they find that it is an easy way to have money.

Lack of parental guidance is another bane of the problem. Nowadays, it is common that more and more couples get divorced. Single parents work hard in order to support them. Moreover, some parents are very busy to work. Therefore, these parents could hardly spare time to take care of their children and communicate with them. In effect, young people will find that their parents do not care about them. Then they may do something to draw their parents¡¦ attention. Therefore, committing crimes seems like to be a good means to them. In addition, even if the ¡¥unconcerned¡¦ youths do not commit crimes, they may feel lonely at home. Then they may often wander on the streets or go to some video game centers. There are always some bad gangsters hunting for their preys in these places. As a result, they will meet some bad guys or triads members and get involved in their illegal activities.

The next point we have to talk about is how to discourage potential offenders from committing crime. Parents and teachers are accountable for engineering the youths. They should teach them to distinguish what is right and what is wrong, and tell them what they should do and what they should not do. Furthermore, they should show their concern toward the youths, in effect, youths would feel warm and treasure their lives. Additionally, the government can ask some popular stars such as Faye Wong and Kelly Chan to transmit a message: ¡¥ Crimes does not pay ¡¦ in a concert. As a result of ¡¥idol effect¡¦, young people will listen to their idols as they set them on a pedestal. This will make youngsters be away from crimes.

At last, we have to make some suggestions to help young criminals readjust to society. The most important thing we should do to help them is to accept them. Since they have criminal records, they may think that everyone looks town upon them. They may also feel humble and withdrawn from society. Therefore, if we can accept them and show them our concern, they will gain their confidence in readjusting to society. Employers should give them jobs and train them. Their parents and friends should support them. Then they can easily readjust to society.

By and large, young people are the pillars of society. All of us should try our best to prevent potential offenders from committing crimes or going astray. I do hope all the young people will contribute to society in the future.
