Death Penalty
96 set 3
Recently, the serious crime rate in Hong Kong has risen sharply. Somebody doubts that if death penalty should be used to maintain the law and order in Hong Kong, Hong Kong will be a safe place.. Upon this controversial issue, the opinions are divided. In this essay, I will examine the pros and cons of implementing the death penalty in Hong Kong.
Implementing death penalty can help to maintain the law and order in Hong Kong. Everyone is afraid of death. People would think twice before committing serious crimes as the consequence is dire. The cases of blackmail, murdering, drug smuggling would certainly decrease. Thus, the serious crime rate will drop drastically. The government can concentrate on promoting economy if the city has few crimes. If not, the general public would suffer. Take Macau as an example, in these few years, Macau is veiled by bloody violence. Murdering in Macau is very common. Every day, there is news that the heads of certain Triad Society or some tycoons are killed. The situation is already out of control. It scares away the tourists as none of them would put their lives in jeopardy to visit Macau. Thus, tourism declines. It puts gigantic impact on the economy of the city. At last, the general public suffers. Implementing death penalty can avoid the bloody violence and help the Hong Kong government concentrates on the prosperity.
There is the other side of the coin. For the sake of human rights, everyone has the rights to live on earth, no one can deprive the others・ lives.
Moreover, somebody retorts that human is not perfect. Everyone would do something wrong. Will it be too harsh to send people to death without giving them chances to correct? Several months ago, a teenager was beat to death by a gang of youth. Some immature and innocent youngsters actually didn・t know what was going on. They merely imitated the others. They didn・t want to kill that boy. If the death penalty is introduced, they can・t escape from the capital punishment. Now, the immature youth are sent to prison, they have chances to correct and they can contribute to society when they are released. Giving chances to the guys is much more positive than just killing them. All in all, implementing death penalty embodies both merits and demerits. The Hong Kong government should have due consideration before making a decision. Actually, if every Hong Kong citizen can behave well, implementation of death penalty need not to be considered.
