University entry with non-academic areas
Non-academic areas are always neglected by Hong Kong as they cannot give us as much achievement as academic areas do. The neglect leads to a huge loss of genius . In light of the loss of talent, last year some universities admitted students due to their achievements in music, sports and so on. Some highly praise the policy while some do not. In this essay, I am going to discuss the pros and cons of the admission policy and air my own opinion towards it.
The new admission policy can foster talent. In the past, only those who got brilliant results in public examinations in academic subjects like history, geography, physics and the like could enter university. For those who were talented in music, sports, performing arts, etc, could not enter university even if they were talented in their subjects! It was a great loss. Many great talented music students might lose an opportunity to have higher training and drama students lose their chances to play as well! Some gave up their talented fields in order to concentrate on their studies so that they could enter a university. These students could be international stars if they had better training in a university. The old admission policy completely blocked their roads to success. Now, with their new admission policy, they have a better chance to be admitted to university and to be trained professionally. It will not only benefit individuals, but also Hong Kong. Talented students will give all Hong Kong people glory if they do well in their fields and win international prizes!
The new admission policy will not only benefit a small number of artists and sportsmen now but also a large number in the future as it will enhance the importance of non-academic areas. Under the education-examination system in Hong Kong, all of us emphasize academic subjects. But when the new admission policy is implemented , the status of non-academic areas will be greatly consolidated. People will realize their importance and begin to develop them. This wrong concept has lasted for years and it will be corrected and all of us will have a more balanced individual development. Actually, a prominent person should not only be good at academic fields. The new admission policy can encourage a correct concept towards education and help more prominent and constructive persons into society.
There is the other side of the coin. The new admission brings problems.
The general academic level will be degraded with those who are good at non-academic areas but do not satisfy the normal requirement for university. Although they are brilliant at music, sports or community services, they cannot handle academic subjects well. Universities mainly foster those who are brilliant in academics. Those who are only good at non-academic fields may not be able to choose a suitable subject for them. They will find difficulties in handling those subjects and suffer. Moreover, as their standard cannot be reached at such a level, the overall standard of universities will then decline. The credibility of university education will then be doubtful. This is a great shame for Hong Kong education.
The low standard of university students will be prolonged as the new admission policy will spread the idea of neglecting academic subjects. The new admission policy, undoubtedly, can consolidate the importance of non-academic fields and help those who are good at such fields to shine. However, some ignoramuses still neglect academic subjects. They will think that they can enter an university easily with their talents. But maybe they are not talented or maybe it is only an excuse for them to escape from academic subjects. As they have less intention to develop their academic knowledge, the general level of academic subjects of Hong Kong will then decline and it will greatly harm the competitiveness of Hong Kong as there are fewer professionals!
All in all, the new admission policy brings both advantages and disadvantages to individuals as well as society. In my opinion, it is a good one. It can foster talented people in non-academic fields which have been neglected. However, the number of such entries should not be over expanded as it does harm the general academic level of universities. Actually, the status of colleges of music, sports, and the like should be enhanced. The universities can concentrate on academic subjects while non-academic colleges can provide professional education with high reputation in the eyes of Hong Kong people. Hong Kong can then thrive in all fields and become a comprehensive renowned international city!
