More discipline in school
Recently, the falling standard of school discipline has been a hot topic in school. Students often break school regulations because they commit gambling, smoking, fighting, or bullying junior form students. Formerly, swearing was a serious offence; but now, it is a minor one. Since many students do not observe the school rules, teachers tend to deal with the major offenses such as fighting or gambling; the minor cases are left intact. In this essay, I will argue we should have more discipline in school.
Someone may argue that students can exercise self-discipline, so that school should give ample freedom to students. However, not all students can exercise self-discipline. Those who are not mature, may not discipline themselves, especially, those who are around secondary two or secondary three level. They always do what they want and do not think of the aftermath. If a school enforces stricter discipline, students will have a chance to correct themselves under the guidance of a teacher. Or else, they will not know they are wrong, they may find it difficult to adapt in society when they leave school. Having a stricter discipline does not imply giving less freedom, but teaching students how to behave well in society.
Strict discipline in school can make students aware of how to live in society. School is a good learning place for students. It is the epitome of the real world. If the school has strict discipline, students will learn to distinguish what is right from what is wrong. When students leave school, they can apply what they have learned in school. As a result, citizens of Hong Kong are trained to follow laws as they follow school regulations.
We aspire to live in a crime-free society. Students aspire to have a mother school that is of a high reputation. When I left my mother school and studied in the present school that is of a low reputation, I can see the importance of discipline in school. Form one students of my mother school follow stricter discipline and students dare not swear. But, at my present school, swear words are easily heard. Students are rude to one another. They even challenge teachers, let alone, prefects. They will ignore the prefects' instructions and insult them with some foul language. We can think of examples of quarrelling between Hong Kong people and the police every day!
Parents do not like their children to have bad behavior. School with a low reputation will suffer from having many students who have family problems. Parents who care about their children will tend to choose schools with stricter discipline. In order to recruit high caliber students, schools should enforce stricter discipline in order to attract parents to choose `them' as their first choice.
All in all, discipline in school is of vital importance. Students should be fostered in a `well-disciplined environment. Although there is a discipline unit in school, the standard of discipline is falling. Should a school enforce more discipline? We have to strike a balance between the discipline of the school and the freedom of students. In this way, schools can foster good citizens.
